Egilsstaðir is located on Iceland’s east coast. The town and the surrounding area are home to some of Iceland’s most beautiful landscapes. The town was established in 1947 as a service center for the region. It has grown a great deal over the years and is now the largest city on the east end of the island.

Marcy and I sayed at the Egilsstaðir House. A lovely bed and breakfast located on Logurinn Lake. Just down the lakes shore line you will find one of the only forests in Iceland, which is man made. You can circumnavigate Logurinn by car. On the north shore you will find a hiking trail leading to Hengifoss, one of Icelands numerous waterfalls. Although the falls are not as large as some of the iceland’s more visited falls, Hengifoss is still spectacular with huge basalt columns on either side. Also on the north shore you will find a motorcycle dirt track if that is your thing.

The fjords were surrounded by green foothills and rocky peaks that reflected in the calm water below. We were there during the spring run off which made the mountain pass striped with the left over snow.

It is definitely worth the drive to get to the less visited side of the island. We saw so few people that we could regularly stop in the middle of the road to take photos. I recommend visiting Iceland right before high season, which begins the end of May. You will find cheaper air fair and accommodation prices, which becomes a big deal when you sit down to your first meal in Iceland and say holy s#!* this place is expensive.
