We arrived in Nice with little problem, accept for a minor incident with airport officials in Dublin. It seems that having a very large hunting knife in your luggage can arouse suspicion. Everyone was very reasonable, and after I explained that it was one of the remaining few objects I owned on this planet, the security officer allowed it to continue on to my final destination.

Photograph by Eric ScottWhere to begin? The French Rivera was fantastic, and despite Nice’s primary population being oriented towards their winter years, I felt right at home—probably because I am ready to retire. Our ten weeks in Nice was the first time in a long while that I was completely happy with what I was doing. I wasn’t helping anyone sell an idea, lifestyle or product that I didn’t believe in, and I wasn’t occupied with busy work. I was learning—learning how to communicate and how to teach others to communicate. The rest of my time was occupied with new friends, the Mediterranean and living cheaply and simply.

Now I am in Paris, looking for work and dealing with all the little obligations that go along with the job hunt—registering for things, petitioning fabrications and crocodile smiles. Don’t get me wrong, living in a city such as Paris definitely inspires my desire for shiny objects, big spaces, comfortable surfaces, etc… but I was fine with out those things, and better without the desire.

So what’s next? I am not really sure. I feel caught between two ideas of life, and I can rationalize them both, though I think my trajectory at this point is definitely headed towards fate, and with any luck I will have the chance to encounter providence. Now, I just need to be a little more brave, and possibly, I will start having more fun.
